Hello Mumma researchers, cousins, family and friends - AUGUST 2002 [If you don't care to receive future Bulletins, please send me a message and I will remove you from this distribution list. These messages are sent out on a random basis when I feel there is something useful to communicate to everyone. There are over 700 people receiving this message.] PREVIOUS BULLETINS & NEWSLETTERS AVAILABLE If you have interest in reading some of the previous Bulletins or Newsletters that were issued, you can download them from the MUMMA archives whose index is located at http://www.mumma.org/archives/archives.htm MUMMAS & MUMAWS in the National Archives A rather interesting web site to visit is the search engine at the National Archives which searches their electronic database. The address is: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/mdbquery.html. Go there and enter MUMMA or MUMA* in search box and click on search. A number of hits will be received for: o Barton Mumaw - a famous modern dancer from Luzerne County who died a few years ago. o Photo of Mumaugh building in Fairfeld, OH o Letter to Daniel Gehr Mumma of Sharpsburg, MD who was Postmaster o Letters written in 1860 by David Mumma, Jr. (b. 1816) to president elect, Abraham Lincoln. David was a politician from Dauphin County, PA o Endorsements by Levi Blessing Mumma, Ohio secretary of the YMCA, for a magic show o Photographs of the Samuel Mumma farm after the Battle of Antietam This last one is interesting as it is an 1862 photograph of the Mumma farm after the battle. This is a high quality photograph, so it will take time to load if you are using a dialup modem: http://memory.loc.gov/ndlpcoop/nhnycw/ad/ad18/ad18025v.jpg It is interesting to note that you can see the photographer (or his helper) standing in the gap of the fence and his horse and photographic buggy can be seen behind the fence at the far left. DNA SURNAME TESTING PROGRAM The DNA Surname Testing Program continues. I apologize for not updating the DNA test results sooner. I now have results for over 40 participants and the number of markers analyzed has increased to 25, so much better detail is available. The next project on my task list is to prepare a revised DNA report and a separate bulletin will be issued on this subject. There has only been one surprise for the Fulton County, PA Mummas. Their link to the original MUMMA immigrants is now doubtful and it is not fully understood. Additional participants would be helpful. The current cost for a 25 marker (loci) analysis is $169. We were also able to prove, using this DNA testing procedure, that William F. Mumaw, the son of Anna C. Mumaw (b. abt 1823 near Conicville, VA ) was fathered by a Harmon Webb, the man for whom Anna Mumaw worked as a housekeeper. Obviously her duties were broad and extensive!! A brie, separate report on this mini-study which utilized 2 descendants of Harmon Webb can be found in the index of the MUMMA Archives or directly at: http://www.mumma.org/archives/WilliamFMumaw.doc as a Word document or at http://www.mumma.org/archives/WilliamFMumaw.doc in PDF format. DATABASE CHANGES A new database was uploaded to the web site on July 30, 2002 and it now includes 51,969 individuals/descendants. This is an increase of 7% over the previous database file of 48,425 individuals. Some of the additions, changes and corrections are quite significant and I would like to thank all of you who supplied corrections and additions: o Revised the entire Fulton/Franklin County, PA Mumma branch. Pamela Mumma took all of the Fulton County, PA data collected by myself, Mike Horton, Ron Rose and other Fulton County researchers and carefully reviewed, revised, edited and enhanced the information associated with this branch I would like to congratulate her on a magnificent piece of work. This new information has been incorporated into the current database. The result is the notes for the Fulton county Mumma descendants are extensive! I only wish the rest of the database was as rich with detailed information as this branch. A great example of her effort can be observed by viewing the top person of this unattached line, David Mumma b. BET 1788-1792. http://www.mumma.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/dmumma/igmget.cgi/n=mumma?I50254 Of course, if you can assist with the identification of David's parents, we would all appreciate the help. Thanks Pamela for a job well done! o Added the descendants of Jacob Mumaw, b. BET 1755-1760. He and his descendants are listed as "unattached" line U53. He appears in Bullskin Township of Fayette County of Pennsylvania in the early 1790's and purchases land with his wife, Elizabeth. Here they raise their family of four girls and two boys. About 1812, Jacob and Elizabeth sell their holdings and emigrate to Tuscarawas Township of Stark County, Ohio and patent 160 acres of land. All of the children marry, however the boys produce no offsprings so the Mumaw name is not carried forward. This information and over 1900 descendants of Jacob were provided to me by one of his descendants, Kay Rybak. In Richard Huffman's 1962 book, researchers incorrectly assumed that this Jacob Mumaw of Bullskin Township was the same person as Jacob Mumma, the son of George Muma. This new information establishes that Jacob Mumma, the son of George Muma, only had one wife by the name of Barbara Noftsinger. If you have a copy of Richard's book, I have created a revised page 46 for his book. While many other pages would also require changes, this is the main page that discusses Jacob. You may download a copy of this revised page in WORD format from my MUMMA archives by double clicking on this link. It should initiate a download of the file. http://www.mumma.org/archives/Huffman46REV.doc [38 KB] o After some extensive research, I was able to connect the Mumma families residing in Butler and Preble Counties of Ohio. The attachment is to John Mumma who lived in York County, PA from the 1790's. It is this John who was the founder of Mummasburg, PA, a Mennonite community just outside of Gettysburg. His son was also named John and this son migrated to Middletown, Butler County Ohio around 1832. He also purchased land in Preble County, Ohio where he founded the town of Euphemia, Ohio. Euphemia has now been absorbed into the town of Lewisburg, Ohio. He was quite wealthy when he migrated to Ohio and he had extensive land holdings and operated grain and flour mills. After his death in 1849, a number of his children suffered early deaths with the result the Mumma family name faded from the history of these counties. One small branch migrated to Dayton, Ohio and eventually to the western states. A brief write up about this family can be downloaded from the MUMMA archives at: http://www.mumma.org/archives/Butler-PrebleCo.doc [750 KB so it is a slow download] o Many of descendants of Henry Muma, ([U43] who came from West Cocalico Township of Lancaster County, PA), migrated to Berks County, PA. In the process of the search, a Samuel Mumma [1835-1891] of Womelsdorf, Berks County, PA was identified along with 65 of his descendants. He and his descendants are listed as unattached branch U50. I believe he came from Hummelstown and it is likely he was an orphan. A number of orphaned children appeared in this general area and it has been very hard to properly connect them with their parents. Assistance with this attachment would be appreciated. o In the last bulletin, I added the branch of George Mumma [U18] who was born in Dauphin County, PA about 1840. His son, Elias Allen Mumma migrated to Custer County, NE. Gary Treat noticed that this Elias Allen Mumma was a very close match to an Elias Allan Mumma from Fulton County. The birth day and month were perfect and the birth year was only off by one year. From the additional information that Pamela Mumma provided in the extensive notes of Elias, it was determined that the birth location of Harrisburg, PA for Elias was incorrect and it should have been recorded in the cemetery records as Harrisonville, PA. This would be an easy error to make. This attachment now places Elias in the Fulton County unattached line of U46. o Again, Jane Moomau Doughty was busy during this period trying to find the link for her Christian Mummer of Virginia. She was researching some of the Mummas of Frederick Counties Maryland and Virginia which resulted in the identification of the descendants of a Jacob Mumma, b. abt 1762, the son of John Jacob Mumma, the son of immigrant Leonard Mumma. This branch migrated to Frederick County, MD in the late 1700 and are extensively reported in the Frederick County church records. Through Jane's great tenacity and detective work, this branch was nicely developed and a few other "lost and unattached" mumaw families were connected. This branch later moved into Frederick County, VA and the upper part of Shenandoah County, VA which provided a source of confusion with the Mumaws/Moomaws who settled in the southern part of the Valley. Thanks Jane for all of your hard effort. o Of course, Jane didn't stop with just one branch. While working on the Maryland records, she came across a George Mummaugh [b. 1809] who resided in Carroll County, Maryland along with his descendants. Through Jane's persistent research, we have identified 65 descendants, including several "live ones" who are helping to sort out this family which has been assigned the number "U51". Hopefully a connections will be made. o Other additions and corrections were supplied by many people and I wish to collective give them a great big THANK YOU. If you submitted changes, revisions or additions and they do not appear in this update or are incorrect, please let me know and I will attempt to correct the problem. I recently upgraded my computer system and I am now able to process a database file for the Internet in less than 1 hour. Previously this took over 8 hours with my old computer system, so I expect to make more frequent updates to the file. I also extensively revised the DATABASE HELP file that you can view on the database search page. In addition to general search instructions, I have now included a copy of the table listed below. This way you can easily review the assigned numbers of the different "unattached" Branch/Tree/Island numbers listed in the database. I hope you find this useful. If any of you can be of assistance linking the various trees together, your help would be appreciated. The cousin marriages between descendants of Leonard, Jacob and Christian Mumma, now prevent me from easily determining the number of people in each of their trees as they are summed in a single tree DATABASE TREE INFORMATION Indiv's Desc's REF# Top Person in a particular tree + notes ------- ------ ---- --------------------------------------- 41742 23937 2 Leonard /Mumma/ b. bet 1690-1700 (1732 immigrant) * * 1 Jacob /Mumma/ b. 1685-1690 (1731 immigrant) * * U8 Christian /Mumma/ b. 29 Aug 1791 (Clark Co., OH) 1904 1186 U53 Jacob Mumaw b. 1755-1760 Bullskin Twp, Fayette Co, PA 1390 787 U46 David /Mumma/ b. 1788 -1792 (Fulton/Franklin Co, PA) 1251 829 U21 Jacob /Muma/ b.
