I am pleased to announce that the Isaac Mumma bible has been placed in the hands of its original owner. Through some good detective work by Wayne Mumma, he was able to discover the name and telephone number for one of Isaac Mumma's descendants. That itself was a lucky find, but it turns out that the person's name he gave me was the bible's rightful owner, Kim Mumma. Kim is the widow of Robert M. Mumma, the son of a previous U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, Walter Mann Mumma. After Kim's husband died, she had the unfortunate circumstance of having a housekeeper of 13 years gradually steal silverware, china and other historical artifacts and memorability, including the family bible. The housekeeper was caught, but by then most of the valuables had been sold, fenced or otherwise disposed of. That bible turned out to be the one that Tracy St. Claire bought on E-Bay and contacted me to assist her in returning the bible to one of the descendants. So, this story has the best of all endings that one could ask for. The bible went "home". I would like to thank all of you who contacted me or Tracy offering to give the bible a good home or help trying to find its original owner. NEW DISCOVERY LINKS TWO "UNIDENTIFIED" LINES TOGETHER AND ADDS A THIRD! I am pleased to announce that Jane Moomau Doughty discovered the Will of Abraham Moomau in a Tennessee courthouse that allows us to clearly link Frederick Moomau (b. 1796) with his father, Christian Mummer, who lived in Augusta County, VA and married Betsy Haupt in 1790. Congratulations to Jane for her splendid detective work and sharing this discovery with everyone. In addition, an examination of the database has revealed that the John Moomau listed in that Will turns out to be John Moma [U32-1] who was born in 1797 in Augusta County and is a brother of Frederick Moomau and another son of Christian Mummer. John Moma migrated to Ohio and eventually on to Illinois. There was previous speculation that John Moma was a son of Christian Mummer, but this document now provides the appropriate "proof". Margaret Dieringer recorded information about Frederick Moomau, John Moma and Christian Mummer in the newsletters that she wrote in the 1980's before Robert Moomaw's book was published. All of those old newsletters are available for viewing on the web site in the "Document Archives" section. You will need to have Adobe Acrobat installed and patience as the files are rather large, but worth downloading time. You can get the important newsletters that relate to John Moma and Frederick Moomau by going directly to the following addresses. Ross Co. Ohio Marriages http://www.mumma.org/archives/NewsV1N1.pdf - p. 4 John H. Moma http://www.mumma.org/archives/NewsV1N2.pdf - p. 5 Christian Mummer (same document as above but on p. 4) John H. Moma http://www.mumma.org/archives/NewsV4N4.pdf - p. 4-5 Frederick Moomau http://www.mumma.org/archives/NewsV2N1.pdf - p. 4 In addition, we have now been able to attach the descendants of Emanuel Moomaugh who was the youngest son of Christian Mummer. This branch migrated to Georgia. We have some living descendants identified and listed in the database. I have put together a Word document that outlines the interconnection of all these families with some source information. You can download this document at: http://www.mumma.org/archives/ChristianMummer.doc Of course, the next goal is to try and attach "Christian Mummer" to the correct MUMMA tree. Who is his father? There has been speculation that "Christian Mummer" is Christian Mumma [#211], the eldest son of George Anthony MUMMA (son of immigrant Leonard Mumma) or possibly "Christian Mumma" [#135] who was the son of "Frederick Mumma" (son of immigrant Jacob Mumma). Another possibility exists that "Christian Mummer" was Christian Mumma [#299], the son of John Jacob Mumma (another son of immigrant Leonard Mumma). There is even the possibility that Christian could be a descendant of the immigrant, Johann Lorentz Momma, who arrived in 1748 and died about 1752 and left children. Nothing is known about any of his descendants. If any of you have any additional records or information that might help resolve this issue, all of us would appreciate your help. Also, I believe this is another opportunity to use DNA testing to help resolve the various relationships. We only had one MOOMAU participant and it would be most useful to have another participant who descends from one of Frederick's son other than James Points Moomau (the current participant descended form James Points Moomau). Likewise it would be great to have a Moma descendant participate and confirm the common relationship. If any of you would like to participate or you know another MOOMAU, MOMA or MOOMAUGH males who would, please ask them to sign-up at http://www.mumma.org/dna_signup.htm. I will be sending out another message shortly sharing the latest DNA test results and implications of this data. Thanks and again, I would like to congratulate Jane Doughty for her excellent effort and work to discover and recognize the importance of Rudolph's Will. I have entered Christian Mummer in the database and linked the Moomau and Moma families together as his descendants. Because of the Henry numbering difficulties when you add a new person at a higher generation, all Moomau and Moma descendants have been re-numbered under the new "unidentified tree" number #U45. This combined branch contains approximately 800 descendants. ATTACHMENT OF WILLIAM F. MUMAW (MOOMAW) In addition to the previous exciting news, we have also made several breakthrough's allowing the attachment of William F. MUMAW (MOOMAW) [b. 1845- 1905] as the son of Anna Mumaw, the daughter of David Mumaw of Conicville, VA. With the assistance of one of his descendants, Lura Vogel and several general researchers living in the Conicville/Jerome area of Virginia providing key information, we have been able to identify the connection. William was previously listed as "unidentified line #U41". William is now listed as Henry ID# 292481. He and his descendants have been renumbered accordingly. He was born near Conicville, Virginia, served in the Civil War with the Shenandoah Sharpshooters and later moved to Mineral County, West Virginia where he married and raised his family. All of his children used the MOOMAW surname spelling and lived in this area of West Virginia and Garrett County, Maryland. The database has been revised accordingly. From all of the evidence examined, we believe William was the illegitimate son of Anna Mumaw. The 1850 census data suggests his father's surname may have been WEBB. One of William's descendants has verbally agreed to participate in the Mumma Surname DNA project. This is an ideal use of DNA to clearly identify whether or not William's father had the Mumaw surname. DATABASE CHANGES A new database was uploaded to the web site on September 9, 2001 and it now includes 47,264 individuals/descendants. Some of the additions, changes and corrections were: o The combining and renumbering of Frederick Moomau line #U15 and the John Haup Moma line #U32 under Christian Mummer #U45. Also added Mummaugh descendants to Christian Mummer. o Attached William F. Mumaw (Moomaw) #U41 as the son of Anna Mumaw [#29248] o Added descendants of Silas Mumaugh #27455 o Other additions and corrections were supplied by many people, too numerous to mention individually. If you submitted changes, revisions or additions and they do not appear in this update or are incorrect, please let me know and I will attempt to correct the problem. All of the people in the Internet database are contained within the various "Mumma Trees". If any of you can be of assistance linking the various trees together, your help would be appreciated. The cousin marriages between descendants of Leonard, Jacob and Christian Mumma, now prevent me from easily determining the number of people in each of their trees as everyone is summed in a single tree DATABASE TREE INFORMATION Indiv's Desc's REF# Top Person in a particular tree + notes ------- ------ ---- --------------------------------------- 40581 23439 2 Leonard /Mumma/ b. bet 1690-1700 (1732 immigrant) * * 1 Jacob /Mumma/ b. 1685-1690 (1731 immigrant) 1239 825 U21 Jacob /Muma/ b. abt. 1750 (Canadian Mumas) 1206 792 4 Peter /Mumma/ b.
