Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 Hello Mumma researchers, cousins, family and friends - Since I seem to be adding various bit and pieces of data and information to the previous "Updates" that I have been sending out, I finally decided to call these messages, the 'Mumma Bulletin'. It will continue to be issued on a random time schedule. After all, I am suppose to be retired and not doing things on a fixed schedule. Yeah, sure! Of course the 'Mumma' title is meant to be generic or "genetic" as the case may be and encompass any surname spellings of people who have a common ancestor with one of the original Mumma immigrants who arrived in America in the early 1700's. This includes all of the various name spelling corruptions and alterations that have occurred over time such as Moomaw, Moomau, Mummah, Mummaugh, Muma, Mumaw, Mewmaw or anything else. The planned DNA Surname Testing Project will help sort out all of these issues. [If you don't care to receive future Bulletins of this type, please send me a message and I will remove you from this distribution list.] DATABASE CHANGES I posted a new database on May 15th and it now includes 43,775 individuals. Some of the additions and changes were: o Included Jacob (b. abt. 1750) Muma, the progenitor of the Canadian Muma line and his children. Also renumbered everyone starting with Jacob. These people are identified as unidentified tree U21. Previously, I only had the descendants of his son, Samuel. No additional data will be posted on the other children (other than the existing Samuel data) pending the results of the DNA Surname analysis project. Additional data about Jacob and all of his descendants can be found at http://www.mumafamily.de/, a site maintained by David Laird Muma. o Added 303 descendants of George Moomey (b. abt 1750) which were supplied by Cathy Moomey Henry and Diane McGuire. They are listed as "unattached" tree number U29 o Added 30 Mummah descendants of Jeremiah Mummah who is believed to have been born in early 1800's, probably in Pennsylvania. o Added 105 descendants of Caracy Mumaugh and George Washington Rumbaugh supplied by Lauralee Fornwalt Byers. o Added additional descendants of Benjamin Franklin Moomaw (b. 1825) which was supplied by James Arthur Moomaw. o Various other smaller corrections and additions. If you submitted changes, revisions or additions and they do not appear in this update or are incorrect, please let me know and I will attempt to correct the problem. All of the people in the database are contained within 18 Trees as follows: TREE INFORMATION Indiv's Desc's REF# Top Person in a particular tree & notes ------- ------ ---- --------------------------------------- 34616 22288 2 Leonard /Mumma/ b. To date, 19 men have signed up to participate in this historic event and I wish to express my appreciation for their support in this effort. We are on the cutting edge of this technology as it is being applied to genealogy. The represented surnames are Mumma, Mummau, Muma, Momma, Moomaw and Moomau. A number of companies have been evaluated and one stands out as providing the lowest cost, the analysis of more Y-chromosome loci and provides the technical support of one of the world's foremost genetic scientists, Dr. Michael Hammer of Arizona University. You can learn about Dr. Hammer and some of the other scientists who will be working on our samples at http://www.familytreedna.com/genecommittee.html. The company with whom I expect to make final arrangements is called "Family Tree DNA", a new company recently founded to provide testing services to the genealogy community. After much discussion with this company, I have arranged an analysis cost of $178 per sample and that is much less than the next lowest company. The home page for this company can be viewed at http://www.familytreedna.com/ I have also been working closely with another gentlemen, Kevin Duerinck who maintains the Duerinck family web site and has been researching this new technology for the last 6 months. He too is assembling a group of men with the Duerinck surname for a similar analysis program. Kevin has collected an extensive collection of information about Y-chromosome testing and provided information and links on his web site. I highly recommend you visit 2 of his pages. They provide great information that I think you will find interesting and educational. These pages are located at: http://www.duerinck.com/genetic.html and http://www.duerinck.com/migrate.html As an aside, I did write up a brief article about this DNA project for my local genealogical society. They are always desperate to stories. If interested, you can view this story at: http://www.l-ags.org/tracer/tracer052000.htm#Cousin? The 19 participants who have signed up descend from a wide variety of various trees. Currently we have 11 participants who are descendants of the immigrant Leonard Mumma. Five descend from his eldest son, George Anthony Mumma, three from John Christian Mumma, and three from his youngest son, John Leonard Mumma. I would especially like to have representatives from all of the sons of Leonard. That would mean having additional volunteers from the descendants of his son, David Mumma, reference numbers beginning with 25 and some male descendants from his son, John Jacob Mumma, reference numbers beginning with 27. A bit of trivia. We even have two men sign up with the exact same surname, yet they descend from widely different branches. With those odds, I guess I should have bought a lottery ticket. Three men have volunteered who descend from the first known immigrant Jacob Mumma. Both descend from his son, Jacob. This group represents a large percentage of the database and a couple more descendants would be helpful statistically. One gentleman who descends from Frederick Moomau will be participating to confirm the connection of that line. Perhaps another Moomau will volunteer. We also have two gentlemen who descend from the Jacob Muma, the progenitor of the Canadian Muma families. One descends from Jacob's son, Jacob and the other participant descends from his son named Samuel. I am glad to see their participation. And last, but not least, two of my good Momma friends from Germany will help us determine whether or not we have a common ancestor between the Mumma and Momma families. While the number of men who have volunteered to participate is excellent and represent a large number of different trees, there are some key trees from which we have no representatives. I would like to enlist your help to encourage some of the male descendants with the Mumma surname from these trees to participate. It would also be most desirable to have a minimum of two people from any tree so that any anomalous data can be cross checked. The family trees from which I would very much like to have participants are as follows: 1) Peter Mumma, the immigrant, b. abt. 1721. Anybody whose reference number begins with a "4" descends from Peter. 2) David Muma, who was born about 1760 and lived in Virginia. Some of his descendants used the Mewmaw spelling for the surname. These descendant's reference numbers begin with "U7-" 3) Christian Mumma who was born 29 Aug 1791 in PA, but moved to OHIO in the early 1800's. He has a large number of descendants and their reference numbers begin with "U8-" 4) Frederick Mumma, b. 1770. He and his descendants were listed in the back of Jacob Hertzler Mumma's book entitled "the Mumma Family of Cumberland PA". While some people think this Frederick Mumma descends from Jacob Mumma the immigrant, no proof exists and Jacob didn't know what to do with them in his book. These descendant's reference numbers begin with "U30-". 5) John Mumma, b. 1790 who married Catherine Ament. All descendant's of this John Mumma begin with the reference number "U28-" 6) We also have the newly attached "Moomey" families whose reference numbers begin with "U33-" I will stop with these as they represent the major trees that we have not been able to attach to one of the original Mumma immigrants. It is always possible that they should not be attached and that no common ancestor exists, but we will never know until these test are completed. I feel sort of like I am doing an "America's Most Wanted" episode. In this case, I am creating the "Mumma's Most Wanted" list. Any help or encouragement you can give to potential participants from this list or from any of the other trees will be welcomed and appreciated. You may ask, "How do I find my reference number so I know from whom I descend?". Good question! They are now listed in the on-line database on each descendant's page. After much pleading, Randy Winch, the outstanding programmer who assisted me in putting the database tools together finally modified one of the utility programs and it now allows private information to be blocked, yet the reference numbers will appear. I wanted to "hug" him after he modified the program for me a week ago. As a reminder, the Mumma reference numbering system is described on the web site and it identifies to which tree you belong and how many generations away you are from the top person in that tree (simply count the number of digits in your reference number). So, how do you sign up? Again that is simple. A convenient sign-up form is on the Mumma web site that you can get to by following the links on the web site or you can go there directly using this URL http://www.mumma.org/dna_signup.htm. As a reminder, the page that describes this project can be found at http://www.mumma.org/DNA.htm The schedule is that I expect to send out the DNA sample collection kits by June 1st and I hope we will have the samples returned, analyzed and the results known sometime in July. Needless to say I will have difficulty waiting for the analyses once the samples are sent in. There is still plenty of time to sign up and join in this historic event, so please do so. Even if you don't feel that you can afford to pay the $178 for a sample analysis, please sign up and indicate how much you can contribute, if anything. There may be additional tests conducted at a later time and it would be good to have an indication of your willingness to participate. I had planned to introduce several additional topics in this Bulletin, but I am running out of gas for this session. Another Bulletin will be sent out as soon as I finish a few "honey-do" items for my wife. In that Bulletin, I expect to discuss: a) the findings about George Anthony Mumma's possible first wife, 2) request your help identifying the John Mumma whose Will was written in 1821 and filed in January of 1823 in Cumberland Co., PA and, 3) discuss the Mummas of Estonia and Kenya. Thanks for your time and I hope you or some male you know with the Mumma (or alternate spelling) surname will sign up to participate in the Mumma Surname DNA testing Project. ================================================ Douglas M Mumma 2123 Farmington Place Livermore, CA 94550-6423 Phone: (925) 447-5164 Fax: (925) 447-8202 e-mail: doug@mumma.org 3
