Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 Hello Mumma-Moomaw researchers, cousins, family and friends - [If you don't care to receive future updates of this type, please send me a message and I will remove you from this distribution list.] DATABASE STATUS - I uploaded a revised Mumma database to the Web site today, June 16th. It now contains 41,380 individuals. This message is being sent to over 400 people who are on the Mumma distribution list. The principal changes for this update have been minor corrections for name spellings, dates, etc. A few additional descendants have been added, such as the Mumah family. The David Mumma line, U-24 was merged with the Jacob Mumma line (b. 22 Mar 1811), U-23. If you submitted changes, revisions or additions and they do not appear in this update or are incorrect, please let me know and I will correct the problem. All of the people in the database are contained within 18 Trees as follows: Tree Information Indiv's Desc's REF# Top Person ------- ------ ---- ----- ---------- 32498 21435 2 Leonard /Mumma/ b. As many of you are probably aware, the Mormon Church has now opened a Web site where you can search some of their Ancestral Files as well as their International Genealogical Index (IGI) files on-line. This system is called FamilySearch and it can be reached at http://www.familysearch.org. It is worth visiting and entering a name of interest. They produce some nice pedigree charts. I will give you some of my observations and comments regarding the data in their system for the Mumma families. First, if you only enter a surname, such as Mumma, it yields 73 matches. Obviously too low considering the amount of Mumma information that their files contain. I have no idea how the system selects the 73 matches that are presented. Not all of them start with the letter "A", in case it was simply beginning at the first letter in the alphabet. In addition to displaying people with the Mumma spelling, it also displays the spellings of Momma, Momi, Maymia, Mummaw, Mummau, Mummey, Mummee, Moomau, Moomaw, Mommo, Mumaw, and Muma. Hummmmmm. It is sort of a Soundex search. I found it is much better behaved if you include a first name or first initial, however it still likes to provide you with a potpourri of surnames. Maybe someone has figured it out better than me and can give us some guidance. Anyway....and now to the results. They very nicely tell you where each of the results were obtained, i.e. from their International Genealogical Index (IGI) or from the Ancestral File (AF). As a reminder to everyone, data from the IGI is probably quite good as these are simply extractions of data from church and civil records. The Ancestral File, on the other hand, are simply a collection of GEDCOM file data that has been submitted by various individuals. Possibly one of you might have submitted data to the Ancestral File. In fact, when I viewed some of Ancestral File records for people I knew, I found that the "submitter" was Charles Grife from Arizona. I find that very handy that they include the submitter's name and address so you can contact them to verify their data. Let me caution you and save you some time and effort. I know Chuck Grife and where his data came from. This is what Chuck did. He took Robert Moomaw's book "Moomaw-Mumma-Mumaw-Mumaugh" published in 1990 and he entered all of the data (by hand) into the Mormon genealogy program called PAF. It took him over 1 year, working a little bit each night, to enter the 20,000 individuals. This was about the time that I was extracting all of the same information from Bob's data files so I was able to assist Chuck and he assisted me. So, I can tell you right now that Chuck has no additional data other than what is listed in Bob's book. That was his source!! Do not waste your time contacting him to find out more information. He is not on-line and has no e-mail address. Also, I sent Chuck a file which contained information about the Momma's of Germany and Europe. I also suggested that there was a possible link to the American Mummas. Unfortunately, Chuck Grife made the link and as a result, you can go up through the American Mummas and continue to the German Mommas and eventually arrive at the Clais von Kettenis back in the early 1400's. Many people now believe that his is the gospel truth! These are real people and valid data, however the link of our American Mummas and the European Mummas is still speculative. There is no proof either way, however I am now more inclined to doubt the link, than believe it. You can find these Mommas in the Mumma Web site database, however they to not link to the Mummas, but are listed as separate trees. It appears that they have not included the names of any living people in the AF files. If a living person is listed in my database, then my database address is identified. I tested it by entering my name and my father's name. All I got was the Mumma web site address. When I entered only my father's name, then his name and the Mumma web site address were displayed. Chuck Grife's name was displayed as the submitter of my father's information. What I did find interesting was the large number of Mumma/Mommas that were identified in the IGI for England in the 1600-1700's. We are fairly certain that Georlack Momma came from Germany (Aachen) or Holland to England. He became a business man in London. I have not had the opportunity to review this data in great detail, but it is interesting because the surname spelling of Mumma also appears. It makes you wonder whether any of our Mumma immigrants came from this "English" branch. I doubt it because almost all of the early Mummas that I have traced spoke German for several generations, where as these Mummas one would have expected to speak English, having lived in England for at least 50 years before emigrating, if they did. If they did emigrant, however, their names would probably not have appeared on the ships lists or Philadelphia oaths, since they would have already been "English" and the oath would not be required. Anyway, it is interesting to consider other alternatives. If any of you have done any research about the "English" Momma/Mumma families, I would like to hear from you. Also, if any of you have some interesting piece of research or information about our ancestors that would be of interest to this distribution list, please send me the information and I will be happy to distribute it.
